Quote from a C&D article about the new F80 M3.
Powertrains: The M3 will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six related to the one in the 335i. It would be wrong to assume, however, that BMW's M performance division simply resorted to reprogramming the ECU. Virtually all parts will be exclusive to the M3; it will be a relatively high-revving unit that should produce roughly 420 horsepower. There will be two transmission choices: a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
It doesn't come straight out and say it's based on the N54 and of course it's all speculation at this point, but it seems to be a safe bet (no point converting an N55 to TT...). Anybody think there's potential to rob the engine for parts? Internals? Turbos?
